Bavarian Coffee

Bavaria, also known as Bayern, is Germany’s largest land state, and is well known for its beautiful, old-world charm. They like their coffee strong and sweet, and the same goes for their booze.

This cocktail adds a winter warmer of peppermint schnapps for the taste of sweet, minty, creamy coffee that we all dream of during the holidays.

What You'll Need

  • 6 oz hot coffee
  • ½ oz peppermint schnapps
  • ½ oz Kahlua
  • Sugar to taste
  • Whipped Cream

Fill your glass about ¾ with hot coffee. Add the schnapps, Kahlua, and sweeten to taste.

Slowly pour the cream so that it rests on top.

French Connection

Rather than whiskey, the French prefer Cognac for the alcohol and Amaretto for the flavor. A typical French Connection is equal parts cognac and Amaretto liqueur on ice.

When served with hot coffee however, it often goes by the name of Cafe Amore.

What You'll Need

  • Hot coffee
  • 1 oz Cognac
  • 1 oz Amaretto
  • Shaved almonds
  • Whipped cream

Rim a glass by moistening and carefully pressing it into the sugar.

Add an ounce of Cognac and an ounce of Amaretto to a warmed glass then fill the rest with hot, black coffee.

For the real deal, top with whipped cream and shaved almonds.

Irish Coffee

This drink is both smooth and sweet, making it one of the most popular coffee cocktails.

The first known experience of Irish coffee was in 1943, when chef and bartender, Joe Sheridan, served the concoction to passengers of a flight making an emergency landing in Foynes, Ireland due to bad weather.

What You'll Need

  • 2 sugar cubes, or to taste
  • 1 ½ oz whiskey
  • 6 oz hot coffee
  • Whipped cream

Rim a glass by moistening and carefully pressing it into the sugar.

Fill an Irish coffee glass about ¾ with hot coffee. Add 2 cocktail sugar cubes and stir. Add the Irish Whiskey and top with cream.

Italian Coffee

The secret ingredient is Strega. The recipe of this liqueur has been a secret since 1860 when it was first produced in Campania, Italy.

It’s an herbal blend, golden in color from its infusion with saffron. When mixed with hot coffee, it releases a wild aroma of mint, fennel and juniper, along with over 60 other herbal ingredients.

It is a bright, light-bodied liqueur that packs a punch of up to 80 proof. The word Strega is Italian for “witch”, from the alleged witchcraft that dates back centuries in the area.

What You'll Need

  • 5 oz hot coffee
  • ½ oz Strega
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 ½ oz whipped cream
  • nutmeg

Rim a glass by moistening and carefully pressing it into the sugar.

Pour coffee and Strega into a hot, Irish coffee glass and add about a teaspoon of sugar. Float some cream on top and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Kentucky Coffee

Kentucky is known for its bourbon, so what better alcohol to mix with coffee could there be for the authentic taste of the American South?

What You'll Need

  • 1 oz bourbon
  • ½ oz Kahlua
  • Dash of vanilla extract
  • Sugar to taste
  • Whipped cream
  • 6 oz hot coffee

Fill your glass about ¾ with hot coffee. Add the bourbon, Kahlua, and a splash of vanilla.

Sweeten with sugar to taste, and slowly pour the cream so that it rests on top.

Sit back and enjoy the taste of the South.

Mexican Coffee

In Mexico, coffee is often brewed with cinnamon and sugar, incorporated right into the brewing technique. The result is a coffee that’s at the same time sweet and spicy. The Mexican coffee cocktail has a similar vibe.

What You'll Need

  • ½ oz Kahlua
  • ½ oz tequila
  • 6 oz hot coffee
  • Sugar to taste
  • Whipped cream
  • cinnamon
  • One star anise (optional)
  • chili flakes to taste
  • Maraschino cherry

Rim a glass by moistening with a lime wedge and carefully pressing it into the sugar.

Fill your glass about ¾ with hot coffee. Add the tequila, Kahlua, and sweeten to taste. Drop in a star anise, if desired.

Slowly pour the cream so that it rests on top, then top with cinnamon and a Maraschino cherry. Add chili to give it an extra kick.

Try it floated with vanilla ice cream for the real down South taste!

Hot White Russian

What Russian cocktail would be complete without copious amounts of vodka?

This cocktail is certainly not for the lactose intolerant, as it’s roughly equal amounts of coffee, cream, and liquor.

What You'll Need

  • 3 oz hot coffee
  • 2 oz heavy cream
  • 1 oz Kahlua
  • 1 oz vodka
  • Whipped Cream

Fill your glass about ½ with hot coffee. Add the cream, Kahlua, and vodka, then garnish with whipped cream.

Shout “God Save the Tsar!” and then down the drink and make another.
